Case Study: Activating the South Gate Community Through Live, Alumni-Powered Storytelling

Overview

SubWire partnered with the South Gate High School alumni community to create a live, participatory experience around three pivotal football games—including the D1 LA City Championship. The goal was simple: reconnect alumni, empower parents and fans to become contributors and broadcasters, and showcase how local sponsorships can authentically support community storytelling.

The Activation

In the weeks leading up to the games, SubWire mailed a simple starter kit to alumni in the South Gate community. The kit (and corresponding video chat room) enabled parents and alumni to easily capture and livestream moments directly into a shared SubWire room—no professional production crew required.

Over the course of three games - two hosted at South Gate - and a nail-biter LA City Championship at LA SouthWest College - several hundred members of the community came together to support in real time on SubWire. Multiple stadium perspectives were streamed simultaneously, creating a dynamic, fan-driven broadcast that reflected the energy in the stands and on the field.

Sponsorship Integration

The South Gate Room was proudly sponsored by @JoeBlosBarberShop (Los Angeles). Rather than traditional ads, the sponsorship was woven organically into the experience:

  • Verbal shout-outs during SubWire livestreams and breaks in the action
  • Promoted links in the live chat
  • Tagged attribution across all related social media posts

This approach delivered authentic visibility aligned with community pride, rather than interruptive advertising.

Alumni Celebration

Beyond the games themselves, SubWire became the digital and physical gathering place for decades of South Gate graduates dating back to the '88 Championship Squad, as they took the field at South Gate's historic Hurd Field for a celebratory reunion and ring ceremony.

The moment was elevated by guest appearances from esteemed South Gate alumni Cypress Hill's Sen Dog and Mellow Man Ace, and a special interview of Ivan Wilson bridging generations and reinforcing the school's cultural legacy.

Results & Impact

  • 150,000+ social impressions on @subwire.io
  • 55,000 unique IG accounts reached
  • Three full games livestreamed by the community to over 1,800 views
  • Dozens of alumni actively participating on-site and in live chat
  • Meaningful sponsor exposure tied directly to community engagement

Why It Matters

This activation demonstrated SubWire's core value proposition:

  • Communities don't need to hire production crews — they need a simple platform for storytellers to come together and share moments.
  • Sponsors win when they support culture, not just eyeballs and clicks.
  • Live, alumni-powered storytelling scales emotional impact far beyond the stadium.

SubWire turned a local championship into a multi-generational, city-wide moment—owned by the community, powered by the crowd, and amplified through authentic sponsorship. Special thanks @JoeBlosBarberShop, Robert Corona, and Martin "Spyglass" Torrea for bringing the community together to make it happen.

Sneak Peak of Our Future:

In 2026, SubWire plans on continuing to add more resources and tools for youth and community event organizers, expanding our feature set beyond live streaming and video content capture. Our vision is to continue becoming the default platform for bringing communities together before, during, and after real-world events.
